Charles Kelly was born in Herefordshire, England, on June 9, 1841. He was the oldest of six children born to John P. Kelly and Eliza Long. Charles learned how to make and repair shoes from his father.
In 1860, Charles married emma Price. He joined the LDS Church in the same year, and in 1862 emigrated to Utah. the couple settled in American Fork, then moved to Brigham City. In 1873, Marie Thomson became Charles second wife, and in 1883 Sarah Ann Wrighton became his third. Charles had 25 children.
While living in Brigham City, Charles was superintendent of the Brigham City Co-operative Factory and director of the Brigham City Mercantile and Manufacturing Association. After the demise of the Co-op, he established a shoe business. Charles was well-liked by his customers because he enjoyed trading jokes and tell fish stories – Charles was an avid fisherman.
Charles was asked to go on a church mission to England in 1885. In addition to preaching to the people Charles walked many miles to comfort people in distress. Following his mission he returned to Brigham City and resumed his shoe business. He sold it to his son in 1899.
One of Charles’ daughters wrote that her father seldom missed a funeral in Brigham City because he wanted to console the bereaved. Charles passed away on April 23, 1905.
