John Welch was born in ::Yorkshire, England, on ::Jan. 6, 1823 to Nicholas and Elizabeth Briggs Welch.
As a boy, John became interested in the cutlery trade and trained with the prestigious firm George Worstanholm & Sons. During this time, he came in contact with some Mormon missionaries and was baptized.
John and other family members who joined the church emigrated to America in 1841. On the ocean voyage, he met Eliza Billington, whom he married shortly after they arrived in Nauvoo, Illinois. While there, John became personal friends with the Prophet Joseph Smith and Patriarch Hyrum Smith. After Joseph and Hyrum were murdered, John and his family journeyed to Utah, arriving in Salt Lake City in 1850. He relocated to Centerville, where he lived for 10 years, then moved to Three Mile Creek, known today as Perry. He became a successful fruit grower and farmer.
In about 1875, John married his second wife, Edwena Jeppsen. The same year, church leader Lorenzo Snow asked John to go to St. George and assist in establishing the grape industry. Edwena accompanied him. Eliza stayed behind to look after their interests locally.
On Aug. 10, 1877, Brigham City was divided into four church wards. John became bishop of the Fourth Ward. He held this position until 1884 when he moved to Paradise in Cache County, where he lived until he passed away.
