Charles Deemer Brown was born in Boreham, Essex, England, on February 16, 1858, to Thomas and Ann Allaker Brown. Charles’ father was a shoemaker and taught him the trade.
At age 19, Charles went to work for the Co-operative Boot-&-Shoe Company in London. Charles relocated with the company to Northampton, the center of the shoe trade in England. The company made boots and shoes for cavalry regiments and officers. On his first day in Northampton, Charles met Emily Campion at a restaurant. They were married on December 25, 1880. The couple had four children.
On December 21, 1885, Charles and Emily joined the Mormon Church. Two and a half years later they booked passage on the ship S.S. Wisconsin that would take them to America. The couple settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Charles’ skills as a shoemaker were utilized at F. Auerbach & Bro. and at the Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI). In 1889, the Browns moved to Brigham City where Charles opened the Boot and Shoe Hospital.
Charles’ church activities included serving as Stake Secretary. He was selected for this position by Orien W. Snow, Stake Superintendent of Sunday Schools. Orien wanted a businessman for the position and chose Charles after walking up and down both sides of Main Street and interviewing all the store owners.
Charles passed away in 1933.
