Marie (Mette) Kathrine Jensen Anderson was born on ::October 11, 1847, in ::Denmark to Jens Pedersen and his second wife Marie Olsen. The family lived in Kirkeskoven, which was on the edge of a beech forest.
When Marie was old enough to attend school, she had to walk a mile in wooden clogs to the site. In the winter the snow drifts were extremely high, and Marie usually lost her clogs jumping over them.
From age 14 to 21, Marie worked away from home. She called one of her employers “Angry Johanna” because she would scold Marie if she fell asleep while working long hours operating a spinning wheel with one foot and rocking the baby’s cradle with the other. Marie also worked for a man who owned a dairy farm where she learned how to make butter, cheese, and rye bread.
Marie met her future husband, Nephi Peter Anderson, at a meeting conducted by Mormon missionaries. Marie was baptized on August 14, 1871. Ten months later Marie left her native land for America. Nephi travelled in the same company. Marie arrived in Bear River City on July 21, 1872, and slept in a haystack her first night.
Marie and Nephi were married on October 10, 1872. They had six children. Marie was Bear River’s first postmaster. The family moved to Brigham City in 1883. Marie died on October 25, 1932, in Brigham City.
