Ane Christine Marie (Mary) Palleson was born ::October 27, 1838 in ::Yongerster, Norre Kongerslev, Denmark. Mary was the next to the last child of Peter P. and Cecilia Christensen Palleson. Since Peter was a deacon of the Lutheran Church, Mary attended church regularly. She was raised in a well-to-do home where the children were provided an education.
Mary’s parents warned her and a younger sister about the Mormon missionaries in the area that were “enticing the young to go to America for what purposes they knew not.”
When Mary was 17 years old, she left home and went to live with her older, unmarried brother to care for his home. Mary celebrated her independence by attending meetings conducted by the Mormon missionaries. On Nov. 8, 1856, Mary joined the Mormon church. When she told her father, he disinherited her.
Because Mary wanted to emigrate to America, she went to work for various wealthy people to earn extra money. When they found out Mary was a Mormon, she was dismissed, thus her savings were minimal; however, Nels Peterson, a Mormon convert, invited Mary to travel to Utah with his family and promised to pay her way. On March 19, 1858 they boarded the ship John Bright, and 32 days later a tugboat pulled their ship into New York Harbor.
Mary arrived in Salt Lake City on Oct. 6, 1858. She lived in Bountiful for one month, then wed fiancé Anton Janson on Nov. 10, 1858. The couple settled in Brigham City. They had four children. Mary passed away on ::May 28, 1900.
