Peterson Pederson (P.P.) Siggard was born on ::Nov. 30, 1844, in ::Ringkjobing, Denmark, to Anne Margrete and Peter Pedersen Siggard. His father died when he was six months old. His mother married Jens Jensen a year later.
When he was 17 years old, P.P. became a traveling salesman marketing woolen goods. At one of the stores he visited, P.P. noticed a girl studying the Bible and other tracts. She told him about a religion called Mormonism. He became interested and was baptized on Jan. 29, 1866. A year later P.P. decided to emigrate to Utah. He had enough money to buy a ticket for himself and four others. They crossed the ocean on the first steamboat (the Manhattan) to carry Danish Mormon converts to America. On the journey to Utah from New York, P.P. says he “took the fever” and nearly died. A well-to-do family in the company had two cows and shared some milk with P.P. He says the milk saved his life.
P.P. settled in Brigham City. Since he had little money, P.P. sold his expensive overcoat and an extra pair of gloves to buy bread and molasses to sustain him. He married Nelsina Jorgensen on Aug. 7, 1871, two weeks after she arrived in Brigham City from Skjerod, Denmark. To support a family, P.P. had an agreement with a businessman in Corinne to bring him provisions transported seven miles in a wheelbarrow. Eventually, P.P. was able to buy a team of ponies. He also became involved in the fruit industry.
The couple had eight children. P.P. died in 1919 and Nelsine in 1936.
