Fourteen-year-old Peter F. Madsen and parents Nels and Martha Marie left Denmark in 1857 for America on a sail ship. They were members of the Mormon church and wanted to join other converts who had settled in Utah.
During their six-week voyage, there was one incident Peter never forgot. As he watched his mother prepare pancakes on the ship’s deck, a large wave crashed over them and swept their breakfast into the ocean.
Another memorable event occurred while Peter and his family were crossing the prairie after a three-year stay in Iowa. While his parents and others in the party were setting up camp, Peter went for a walk and saw an unfamiliar, beautiful black-and-white animal. He cautiously herded it into camp so everyone could see it. Amid screams and accusations, Peter learned the animal was a skunk.
Peter and his parents arrived in Brigham City in the fall of 1860. After studying telegraphy in Salt Lake City, Peter became Brigham City’s first telegraph operator. Other jobs he held during his lifetime included Tithing Clerk, County Clerk, County Probate Judge and Justice of the Peace.
On Nov. 10, 1873, Peter married Emelia C.M. Dahlgren. The couple had 7 children and 16 grandchildren.
