Hans Peter Jensen was born to Jens Petersen and Kirsten Hansen on March 3, 1815, in Lille Hagested, Sjaelland, Denmark. When Hans was 8 years old, his father insisted he contribute to household expenses by working full time. He became an apprentice metalsmith and later owned a prosperous iron foundry in Nørre Sundby.
In 1850, Hans and his wife Sarah Clausen joined the LDS church. After serving missions in Bornholm, Denmark, and in Norway, Hans served in the presidency of the Scandinavian Mission. To efficiently visit the far-flung branches of the church in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Northern Germany, Hans purchased a sailboat he named Zion’s Lion. (The word “Lion” is written as Løve in Danish.)
Because of his church activities, Hans’ life was repeatedly threatened. He decided to emigrate to Utah with his wife and children. They settled in Brigham City where Hans opened tin and shoe shops as well as a tannery.
Hans was a member of the first City Council when Brigham City was incorporated in 1867 and a member of the Brigham City Cooperative in 1870.
The husband of 7 wives and father of 34 children, Hans died in Brigham City on May 29, 1883, at the age of 68.
