Eli Harvey Peirce, Sr. was baptized a member of the Mormon Church in 1842 by Prophet Joseph Smith. After the prophet’s death, Eli was one of 143 pioneers that accompanied Brigham Young to Utah.Pioneer Overland Travels.
They arrived in Deseret, now Salt Lake City, on July 24, 1847. Shortly after, Eli helped build a fort for protection from Indians. He also built log and dirt houses and planted crops. In the fall, Young asked Eli to organize a company and go to California to obtain seed grain to plant in the spring.
In 1850, Eli married Susannah Neff. They came to Brigham City to live in 1851. Even though they were surrounded by Shoshone Indians, the settlers rarely had problems with them. One evening as Eli was returning home from Salt Lake City, two Indians fired on him. Eli laid down in his wagon and headed toward Brigham City with his horses “on a run.” This was the settlers’ first Indian scare.
Eli went into the mercantile business. When he was out of town, his wife ran the business with a hired man.
After the city’s name was changed from Box Elder to Brigham City, Eli became its second Bishop in 1855. He held this position until he was called on a mission to England in the spring of 1857. While in England he caught a cold which eventually caused his death.
